Individual & Family
What is an estate?
Legally speaking, an estate is everything that you own. This includes a house, car, checking account, investments, and any other personal possessions. Often, people think that estate planning is only for the wealthy, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Single or married, hetero or same-sex couples, with or without children, regardless of age of financial status, everyone deserves and needs an estate plan.
Why is estate planning important?
Without an estate plan, the state may decide what happens to your minor children, your assets, and your items of sentimental value. Having an estate plan in place may save your family money down the road, and will give you the peace of mind that your wishes will be honored after you are gone.
An estate plan may include a Last Will and Testament, Advanced Surgical Directive (Living Will), Trust, Medical Power of Attorney, General Power of Attorney, or other instruments designed to distribute your estate to your loved ones or give your trusted family members or friends the power to act or you if you are unable to do so.
